In this lesson, students learn how to determine a molecule’s handedness, an essential trait of many biomolecules. Students turn their attention to the 20 amino acids, handed molecules that are used by all living things to construct proteins. Students build models to observe their complex geometries and predict their properties. Learning the 20 amino acids sets the stage to literacy in biochemistry, more than any other topic! Please also see the Bonus video, which is a PyMol activity about building amino acids inside the molecular modeling software.
