Hopatcong Middle School: Year 2

It’s been wonderful working along side Jim McKowen, a middle school teacher from Hopatcong, New Jersey. He was among the first teachers to see the value in bringing biochemistry to young students, and has been a great collaborator for two years now. Please read his testimonial below.

“The Biochemistry Literacy for Kids program has been a great addition to our grade 6 STEM curriculum. Giving students the opportunity to use this program to understand the beginnings of Biochemistry has been amazing. Students are learning and understanding college level science in the 6th grade, and having conversations about amino acids, flavor molecules, among other things. This program has shown some of my students that they are capable of high level learning, and opening the door to conversations about advanced science topics, such as food science and pharmaceutical work. Having taught the program for the past two years, I continue to be amazed at what the students are able to create, and the conversations that they are having during class. I would encourage anyone to check out this program, and firmly believe that this is a positive stem toward getting kids interested in the STEAM disciplines moving forward!”
